Featuing African Art By LaMone'

In My Own Words
LaMoone-Artist Statement
The motivation for my painting come from my background. I was raised by my grandmother and grandfather and my grandmother was very religious and she kept me in Church to make sure I stayed religious. My grandfather taught me how to become a man. And if I wanted to become anything I had to work at it. And not to let anyone tell me what I can't do. And, I had a friend, a friend of the family, a white man who told me when I was about 7 , that I would never become anything. And when I grow up I got independent and I learned not to let anyone to tell me what I can't do. I can do whatever I can set my mind to. So I started drawing and people used to tell me that I was very talented and let the world see my work. And I did't belive them I did't think I was that good. So I met this young lady who worked at the YMCA and her Husband is the person who draws the Buffalo Soldiers. He asked me to do some work for him. He asked me to draw some pictures. He saw the pictures and told I wasnit black enough for him. I didn't understand what he meant by that statement. I stopped drawing for a while. Until a friend of mine told me not to let anyone rain on my parade. I stated drawing again. I learned to create my own identity. So what motvates me is rejection and pain and suffing. This makes me get creative and brings out the best in me. It's because of my ggandmother and grandfather that I am who I am.
